Josh Allen, the quarterback for the Buffalo Bills, was crowned the league’s best trash-talker and is now a nominee for the NFL’s sportsmanship award.
During their bye week this past weekend, the Buffalo Bills were able to recuperate in anticipation of their Week 13 game against the San Francisco 49ers.
Each team nominated one player from their roster for the 2024 Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award, and the NFL announced its 32 nominees before the end of Week 12.
The NFL states that the winner is the player “who best demonstrates the qualities of on-field sportsmanship, including fair play, respect for the game and opponents, and integrity in competition.”
Josh Allen, a star quarterback, was chosen by the Bills as their nominee. This is the second time that Buffalo has nominated Allen for the award, with the first time coming in 2021.
Many have brought attention to the fact that Allen was chosen as the top trash-talking quarterback in an ESPN anonymous player poll a few months ago. Players also vote on the sportsmanship award, which clearly runs counter to that outcome.
In any case, Allen is now in the running for the honor, which will be given out at the NFL Honors. The NFL Foundation will provide $25,000 to a charity of the winner’s choosing.
According to NFL senior vice president of football operations Troy Vincent, “sportsmanship is the core of the game, the vanguard of public confidence, the keeper of game integrity.” “These Rooney Sportsmanship Award nominees exemplify the spirit of fair play and the values of respect, integrity, commitment to team and resiliency at the highest level of competition.”
