Russell Wilson has led the Pittsburgh Steelers to a 4-1 record since taking over as the starting quarterback, but former NFL MVP Cam Newton believes that the team have been ‘carrying’ him
Even though Russell Wilson led the Pittsburgh Steelers to a 4-1 victory as the starting quarterback, Cam Newton made it apparent that he is not thrilled with his performance. Newton claims that Wilson has received too much praise since the team “carried him.”
Wilson was chosen by Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin despite Justin Fields having a 4-2 record as quarterback 1, and it appeared to be a wise choice, especially with wide receiver George Pickens playing well.
However, during his 4thand1 podcast, Newton offered his frank opinions on his former rival after the team lost to the Cleveland Browns on Thursday Night Football.
“The Pittsburgh Steelers are carrying Russell Wilson,” he stated. Considering his circumstances, I’m arguing that he isn’t acting any differently.”
“What alarms me was this statistic that is like ‘Wilson is undefeated, the Steelers are 4-0’-who have they played?” he said, slyly, in reference to the kind of teams they have faced. They faced the Ravens, the Jets, the Giants, and a Washington Commanders club that was still in the bubble. Chris Boswell, incidentally, booted every point they made [against Baltimore].
Wilson has a noteworthy 98.6 quarterback rating and has nailed seven touchdowns to two interceptions since replacing the starter.
He now ranks 10th in the NFL, overtaking players like Brock Purdy, Matthew Stafford, and Patrick Mahomes, thanks to this outstanding stat.
Wilson’s time with the Steelers may not be finalized despite his excellent performance. “I still view Justin and he is, I think, [a] premium starter in this league, so it’s a fine line,” Pittsburgh offensive coordinator Arthur Smuth said, implying that Fields is the team’s key man despite only being on a one-year contract. He can benefit the squad, but you don’t want to be a gadget man.”
Wilson might sign a big contract when he looks to free agency after this season concludes since several teams who are in dire need of a quarterback improvement may enter the bidding war.
