Burnley and Coventry City began this season aiming to compete for promotion, but as things stand, only the Clarets find themselves well-placed near the top of the Championship table.
Scott Parker’s team currently occupy 2nd place in the division, while the Sky Blues, now led by new manager Frank Lampard, sit in 16th following a disappointing start under former boss Mark Robins.
Despite their contrasting league positions, both Burnley and Coventry City are looking to bolster their squads in January, and they may find themselves competing for the same target.
According to Sky Sports Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg, writing on X, both clubs are interested in Philadelphia Union left-back Kai Wagner.
Wagner has also drawn attention from Italian clubs Atalanta and Parma, as well as teams in Spain and Germany. However, his €2m release clause presents a realistic opportunity for the Championship sides to secure his signature.
Kai Wagner, 27, has delivered an impressive return from left-back, contributing one goal and 12 assists in 45 appearances. Notably, this output comes despite him being deployed as a wing-back in only four of those games.
More on Wagner…
Since joining Philadelphia Union in February 2019, Wagner has made a significant impact in the MLS, cementing his reputation as a standout player. It’s no surprise that he has attracted interest from European clubs alongside Burnley and Coventry City.
Primarily utilized in a back four, Wagner is a potent creative force from the left flank. Across 215 games for Philadelphia Union, he has tallied an impressive 44 assists and scored eight goals. Though capable of playing as a wing-back, his primary role has been as a traditional left-back.
Before his move to the United States, Wagner developed in Germany, coming through the youth systems at FC Augsburg and Schalke 04. He later made a name for himself with Würzburger Kickers, which paved the way for his transfer to Philadelphia Union.
